What Makes a Door Lock Stop Working?

Most lock faults come down to a few causes. The lock is not always the whole story, so I check the door as well as the lock.

Worn cylinders: Years of use wear the pins inside the cylinder, so keys stick, turn roughly or stop working.
Failed gearboxes: On uPVC and composite doors, the gearbox drives the locking hooks or bolts. When it fails, the key turns but nothing happens, or the handle feels loose or crunchy.
Worn or damaged keys: A worn key can look fine and still damage the cylinder. Copies of copies make it worse.
Handle and spindle faults: A snapped spindle or loose handle stops the latch from working.

Worn keeps and latches: Damaged plates stop the bolts from engaging properly.
